Since the early 1960s, Michael Kane has been considered one of Ireland’s most
challenging and innovative artists. He first exhibited with the Hendriks Gallery
in Dublin, before moving on to The Project, Emmett and Lincoln Galleries, and -
more recently - the Rubicon Gallery. His paintings and graphic works have been
acclaimed both within Ireland and abroad. He exhibited annually with the
Independent Artists Group (1961-1988) and has been included in numerous
important group shows, including most recently the Artists Century - Self
Portraits 1900-2000 exhibition at the RHA and When Time Began to Rant and Rage
which toured to New York, California, Liverpool and London (at the Barbican). In
the catalogue of a retrospective of Michael Kane’s work, held at the RHA in
1995, Ciarán MacGonigal described Kane’s great ability as both artist and orator
– a protagonist on all matters aesthetic who has constantly argued the need to
internationalise Irish art. A copy of the catalogue, along with that from Kane’s
solo exhibition at the Art Space Gallery in 2001, are included with this lot.
