As part of Miami Art Week taking place during the 22nd year of Art Basel Miami Beach, Lion and Unicorn Auctions proudly presents a collection of contemporary art with selections from the collection of the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach and pieces from the Collection of Miami Lawyer, Activist, Collector and Gallerist Alicia Hancock Apfel (1964-2024).
Alicia Apfel was a prominent art collector, gallery owner and civil rights attorney in Miami. Ms. Apfel worked with many arts organizations including the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami. Her love for art and the creative spirit led her to establish Space Mountain as an art gallery and performance space for artists and musicians. Ms. Apfel was an artist herself and an avid collector of contemporary and transgressive art. She amassed a fascinating collection of art and objects that reflected her strong-willed passion to give voice to the underrepresented. Ms. Apfel’s personal art collection includes original pieces from the California Art Duo: The Date Farmers; Neo-pop Artists Brad Kuhl and Monique Leyton; Artist and Filmmaker Greg Haberny; Mark Price; Cuban Artists Alain Guerra and Neraldo de la Paz; French duo Florian and Michael Quistrebert; Street Artist Swoon; Katrin Korfmann and more. The personal objects range from rare 1st edition books, a robust research art library, rare punk music and counterculture objects, as was well as political memorabilia, including a collection of Bush-Gore 2000 Florida recount material from inside the Miami-Dade offices where Ms. Apfel was a recount observer when the infamous "Brooks Brothers Riot" took place and stopped the recount.
Ms. Apfel’s collection will be joined with contemporary works from the collection of the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, including selections from the American abstract expressionist, Betty Parsons (1900-1982). Other featured lots include American glass artist Chihuly and a limited edition signed print of the 1983 Miami installation, Surrounded Islands by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
