Mexico, Real del Monte,Hidalgo State - March 21, 1864 - El-Chico Silver Mining and Reduction Company
El-Chico District. Cert. #281, issued to Chas. Rule in 1864 for 10 shares. Signed by two directors and by the secretary. No vignette other than the company seal at center showing an eagle perched on cactus and grasping a writhing snake in its beak. No border, but fancy monogram plate at left with company’s initials. Uncancelled. No printer noted. The inclusion of the “Limited” in the company’s name suggests it was incorporated in England. The Mining and Smelting Magazine, Vol. 5, January-June 1864, pg. 44 notes that a prospectus for this company was issued for the purpose of purchasing the San Juan de Mayas mine in the same district (El-Chico), located 9 miles from Real del Monte, with the adjoining smelting works. Real del Monte is located 100 kilometers north of Mexico City in the mineral-rich, ancient mining area of the Pachuca Mountain range. Silver was discovered there in 1552, which led to the creation of 4 settlements. Real de Tlaulilpa (later Pachuca) and Real del Monte are the 2 most notable of those settlements. There is fascinating history in the lore of this area.
