c1700-This is an extraordinary find of six different items dating back to the 17th century. 1) A display box of 29 assorted buttons and coins dug up from the Sea of Cortez. There appears to be a musket ball in the group. 2) A pair of Spanish Majolica Plates, each measuring 7.5” in diameter and hand painted with a blue floral pattern. 3) A 17th century, black-glazed ceramic gin bottle that measures 11” tall and still has barnacles attached. 4) Two 18th century Spanish cutlasses that show the wear and tear of spending a few centuries at the bottom of the ocean. One is 23” longand has a portion of its hilt guard still attached, the other is 21” long. Both are encrusted with rust and whatever else the sea put on them over the 200 years they were submerged. According to historical records, the Spanish ran a trade route between Baja California and Manila, and whether these items came off a wreck or were just a result of clumsiness is unknown. This is indeed an unusual and historic lot for all you seafaring collectors out there. HKA#64897
