Mexican War Letter,<p>ALS signed Enos P. Wiley, to Wm. Carter, Sept. 29, 1846 "Texas, Mouth of the Riogrand" [sic]. Written by a soldier who took sick and was recovering in camp. Mentions Taylor’s march on "Montary" [sic] and impending battle, with troop strengths, and likelihood of peace coming soon. Talks of unscrupulous contractors cheating the military in supplying food & equipment, detailed information on poor health of the U.S. vols., talks of nearby town of "Mattiniorer" (?) "those that have been up there and back say...it is filled up with gamblers, ---, cutthroats, negros mexicans and whores, great place now that Mattiniorer." Two page folded lettersheet with 3 sides filled with text and on side addressed to Defiance, Ohio, with New Orleans post mark.<p>Normal folds with light foxing, quite legible, VG+.
