Mexican School 17th cent. Portrait of the Infante Carlos, the future King Carlos (Karl) II. w/ the order of the Golden Fleece and the Royal Spanish crown, oil on canvas, 122 x 91,5 cm, w/ frame, (Wo)€ 30.000 - 40.000 US $ 29.700 - 39.600 Ludwig Meyer identifies the sitter as the Infante Carlos, the future King Carlos (Karl) II. The face is based on a portrait as a young man by the father of Velasquez, from 1623. The crown on the cushion is that of the kingdom of Spain while the black garments suggest a bereavement. The painting is of particular historical interest because the early death of the new king Karl II. brought Hapsburg rule over Spain and its vast colonial empire to a close, and resulted in the War of Spanish Succession. Provenance: owned by German nobility for over 80 years, Expert's Report: Ludwig Meyer, Archiv für Kunstgeschichte, 16.12.2001.
