The following information was taken in part from the book “They Saddled the West” by Lee M. Rice and Glenn R. Vernam, 1975. Including with the description is a drawing of a Mexican Santa Fe saddle by Vernam. Thisdrawing and historical description has been determined to be the same as this saddle by saddle historian, Dale Moore. The fork and horn appear to be hand carvedfrom a fork of a tree. The top of the horn is 6” from front to back and shows the circular growth rings of the tree. The fork and horn are one solid piece. The saddle pockets over the back are made with two pieces of leathermeasuring 38”. The bottom on each side forms pockets. The maker’s stamp is “Talabarteria Aquirre.” The saddle pockets appear to have been added at a later date. Talabarteria refers to “saddlery” and Aquirre is themaker’s name. The skirts are padded with a felt or some sort of matted material. The Mexican Santa Fe was closely related to the Vaquero saddle of California, carved wood
