From the John Coffee Hays, Applewhite-Clark Collection. Gold bullion holster for percussion pistol attributed to Mexican President and General Santa Anna during the Mexican–American War. Gold Bouillon threaded and embroidered holster with cross sling, was captured in the Mexican-American war by Col. John Coffee Hays of the First Mounted Texas Volunteers in 1847. Hays and his men were to capture or kill Santa Anna. Managing to corner him at his estate, Santa Anna escaped just minutes before Hays arrived. The raid is well documented and many artifacts were captured and eventually became part of the John C. Hays Collection. The John C. Hays Collection became available in 1913 following the death of his wife Susan Calvert Hays, The collection was offered for sale by Hays' daughter, Betty Hays Norris, and purchased by in 1914 by Harry B. Crozier of Austin, Texas.
