Mexico, dated 1921. Oil on tin. A very unusual ex-voto dedicated to a rare saint, San Nicolas de Bari (saved 3 children from drowning in a pickle barrel). Tells the story of Nicolas Gomes who recovered from an internal illness and is the namesake for St Nicholas/Santa Claus. His fame is based on 2 main accomplishments. The first is the "P G" pickle barrel incident and the second "R" version has him purchasing young foundling girls off the street to so they'll not grow up to be sold into prostitution. After giving them a good Christian education, he made sure they married right and gave many bright sparkling gifts at their weddings. The gift giving connects him with his "Father Christmas" identity. Lovely painting, in very good condition. 10” x 7”.

This lot will be sold not subject to a reserve. The starting price is the price at which the item can sell.
