1864, Mexico. Letter G Bond for 100 pounds sterling bearing 3% interest. Black with light blue background. Attached coupons at right. Folds. Uncancelled and very fine. Taking advantage of the Civil War, Napoleon III established Austrian Archduke Maximillian as Emperor of Mexico and sent French troops including the Foreign Legion to support him against the Mexicans who wanted no part of this imperial powerplay. The United States was incensed at this threat to sacred “Monroe Doctorine” and supported the revolutionary government against Maximillian as well as threatening Napoleon III with war. Napoleon withdrew his troops leaving Maximillian to the firing squad. This security was part of the financing of the Mexican Empire.
