Metropolitan Arms Co. Police Model Revolver
A very close copy of the Colt Model 1862 Police. Manufactured between 1864 and 1865. Following the burning of the Colt factory, this company began producing models nearly identical to the popular Colts of the day. The major mechanical difference between the Metropolitan and the Colt was the use of a pivoted lever on the former rather than the rack and pinion style as on the latter. Total quantity produced was around 2,750, making this a rare little revolver. 36 cal. with a 5 shot half fluted cylinder. Matching serial numbers of 1758. Serial numbers ranging from 1100-1800 were not marked with the Metropolitan Arms Co. information. These guns most certainly saw use in the Civil War. This particular revolver was likely tinned by the factory or during the period for Naval use. (Protecting the gun from the elements of salt water.) Gun is in very good, original condition and fully functional. The spring that advances the cylinder has weakened due to age and this results in the cylinder not advancing always as it should. Of addied interest is a name and possible date etched into the grip strap. This is faint either due to wear or possible intentional defacing. Figuring out the name on this gun could prove to be very interesting! Current values range from $500 to 1850 without the holster.
