Metcalf,AZ - Greenlee County - 1904 - Mining Train atop Bridge Photograph *Territorial* :
The train “Little Emma” hauls ore down Chase creek. Photograph measures 6 1/2”x4 3/4”, green single matte 9”x7”, medium contrast—tends toward the grays, and the focus is sharp. There is minor wear on the edges of the matte and photograph. No photographer identified. Metcalf was a town located on a branch railroad about 8 miles northwest of Clifton. This is a great photo, likely “Little Emma” the wood burning locomotive used to transport ore out of mines such as the Longfellow. Metcalf was a copper camp established after 1872. Though discoveries had been made as early as 1856, the area did not begin to develop until after soldiers from New Mexico were searching for Native American “agitators.” After finishing their duties for the U.S. Government, Joe Yankie and Robert and James Metcalf returned to continue searching for placer gold. They located the Longfellow, Arizona Central, and Metcalf claims.
