<B><I>Message of the President, Submitted to Both Houses, December 21, 1838</B></I></B></I>, 32 pages, 5.5" x 8.5". Published By Order of Congress. Houston: Telegraph Power Press./3000, 1838. Dr. E.C. Barker in Chapter 24 of Johnson and Barker's <I>Texas and Texans</B></I>, devotes considerable space to President Mirabeau B. Lamar's message which, he says "has become justly famous for its strong advocacy of public education." After recommending the appropriation of land for the purpose of general education, Lamar calls the time "a propitious moment, to lay the foundation of a great moral, and intellectual edifice, which will in after ages be hailed as the chief ornament and blessing of Texas." Though the <I>Message</B></I> is dated December 21st, both the Senate and House Journals record that it was read on December 20th. Water staining and soiled on covers and first four sheets, light soiling through text. Very good condition.
