Merwin & Hulbert Third Model large frame Single Action revolver, 44-40 cal., 7” barrel, nickel finish, checkered black hard rubber grips, #3508. This gun is stamped in small letters “W. H. Howard” on the right bottom side of the frame; consignor information indicates this gun recently surfaced in Northern California and that there was a stagecoach robber in that area with this name. A copy of an article on Howard accompanies this lot and indicates that Howard was involver the five robberies in the Redding, California to Linkville, Oregon stage route beginning in the fall of 1891. Howard and two companions were identified and subsequently arrested but both escaped. Wells Fargo detective John Thacker began the search which culminated in Howard’s demise while resisting arrest via one blast of a Deputy’s shotgun. This Merwin & Hulbert is in overall good to very good condition showing approx. 80% muted original finish with some scattered dings, scratches and small spots of pin prick pitting, good bore, action and markings. The grips are overall good with a transverse crack in the left grip. Est.: $6,500-$7,500.
