This is a Merwin & Hulbert revolver, manufactered by Hopkins & Allen of Norwich, Conn. These revolvers were quite robust and thought to be the "strongest design" of its time. A quote from gun auther Arthur Gould of "The Rifle" magazine a publication of the NRA. These first models were produced from 1876-1878 in either .44 M&H or .44-40 Win. This is a quite unique gun because it has several inovative designs; the barrel twists 90 degrees for unloading and reloading, the machining tolerances are so tight a vacuum would push out spent cartridges but not the loaded ones, by opening the barrel and cylinder aided in cleaning, and built with a nickel finish superior to blueing. The earliest models had a wedge that neded to be removed before complete dissasembly similar to other Colt designs. Our piece is S/N 13767 built with a lanyard D-ring at the bottom of the grip, popular with police officers of the period and with a 7 in. barrel. There is pitting on the barrel due to holster wear and the nickel finish is about 50%. Single action mechanicals with composite period grips.
These revolvers never caught on because they were manufactured by Hopkins & Allen a Merwin & Hulbert subsidiary and thought to be of poor quality (which they are not).
