Showcased in this lot is a RARE Merwin, Hulbert & Company, large frame, single action, nickel plated revolver, chambered in .44 Winchester Center Fire (.44-40). According to Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms, 9th edition, regarding M "Their revolvers, though, have been considered by some authorities the equal of Colts for quality and, in some certain features, perhaps superior... and deserving of the increasing popularity only recently acquired". The revolver debut in 1876, and was manufactured through the 1880's. For that time period, the firearms had an unusual, and very advanced operating procedure for clearing spent cartridges from the cylinder. With the hammer pulled back into the first safety notch, actuate the slide-lock on the bottom of the frame, in-front of the trigger assembly, and simply twist & pull the barrel and cylinder forward, ejecting the spent cartridges. Once the cylinder has been emptied, return the assembly back to position, and there is a slide-down loading gate on the right side of the revolver. Additionally, there is a spring loaded push-lever located on the left side of the frame, which when pushed inward, it will allow the cylinder to be removed for cleaning. In addition to the operating features for firearm use and maintenance. Merwin firearms was manufactured by Hopkins & Allen because their nickel plating process was said to be second to none and Merwin knew he could offer superior nickel plated revolvers for the price that other companies were offering in blue. This revolver shows exceptional finish retention for being close to 150 years old. The revolver utilizes a 7 ½” round barrel with fixed blade front sight. The six shot cylinder is chambered in .44 WCF. The frame is marked Calibre Winchester 1873. The steer horn grips are in good condition. Underneath the grips the frame is stamped 1835. The cylinder, and barrel also show a matching 1835 serial number. The revolver is marked “Pat. Jan. 24. Apr. 21. Dec. 15.74. Aug. 3. 75. July 11. 76. Apr. 17. 77. Pat's Mar. 6. 77." on the top of the barrel, "The Hopkins & Allen Manufacturing Co. Norwich. Conn. U.S.A." on the left side of the barrel. The revolver shows tight mechanics, which are perfectly functioning, perfect grips, absent of cracking, solid screw heads, dismantled only with appropriate tools over time, and the bore shows bright condition, small areas of pitting with strong rifling. As it sits, this revolver may be considered one of the finest Merwin, Hulbert Large Frame Single Action Revolvers available. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Matt
