Merwin Hulbert 3rd Model .44 W.C.F. S/A Revolver
Offered for sale is a fine example of a Merwin Hulbert 3rd Model Frontier Army double action 44 W.C.F. revolver. This revolver features a six shot cylinder, 5” round barrel, factory blue’d frame and barrel. Merwin, Hulbert, and Co. or Merwin Hulbert was an American firearms designer and marketer based in New York City which produced revolvers and rifles from 1876 through 1916. Retaining the general look of its predecessors, the 3rd model had significant changes. The first was the addition of a top strap over the cylinder, which added to the strength of the design. The same mechanism for extracting cartridges was retained. The barrel wedge was eliminated as an unnecessary feature. The scoop flutes were replaced with the more common ¾ length flutes for a slight weight savings. The third model could be ordered in either single-action or double-action. This is a spectacular Merwin, Hulbert & Company 3rd Model Double Action Army revolver. These pistols were revered for their clever mechanics and splendid craftsmanship. They were built like tanks and the unique twist action made them easy and fast to load. They were quite expensive and thus not as common as Colt Single Action Army or Remington Single Action Army 1875, but they were carried by luminaries such as Jesse James. The revolver shows great patina with some finish remaining. The action functions. The left side of the frame below the cylinder is marked “CALIBRE 1873 WINCHESTER” indicating this big six shot revolver was chambered for the popular and powerful .44-40 cartridge of Winchester Model 1873 fame. These revolvers were manufactured from 1883 through 1887. Serial Number: 1993. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
