Merrick's Six Cord Spool Oak Advertising Cabinet
Featured in this lot is this late 1890s to early 1900s Merrick's six cord spool oak advertising cabinet. Tim Merrick, Austin Merrick, and Origen Hall founded the business as a partnership that went by the name of Merrick, Bro. & Co. In a small building in Mansfield, Connecticut, Merrick's Thread Company first began business. The founders concentrated on producing threads for the expanding textile industry of the time, serving the requirements of textile mills, clothing producers, and other businesses involved in the textile industry. Merrick's Thread Company created threads that were renowned for their strength, consistency, and durability through meticulous attention to detail and the application of cutting-edge technology available at the time. Merrick's Thread Company prospered as the textile industry grew and the need for threads increased. The partnership grew and changed into a successful company called Merrick's Thread Company. Merrick's Thread Company increased the range of products it offered over time to cater to industries other than textiles. Its premium threads were used in a variety of industries, including sewing, upholstery, embroidery, and others that called for dependable and durable thread options. Beyond Mansfield, Connecticut, Merrick's Thread Company had a reputation for superb craftsmanship, dependability, and innovative products. The company's threads gained a devoted following of customers and were in high demand throughout the area. The cabinet shows an oak wood construction with two sections of stenciled glass. The stenciled glass reads, "Merrick's Six Cord Soft finish Spool Cotton" in gold lettering. The bottom shows a door on the base to retrieve the spool. On the top of the cabinet on a small metal plaque it reads, "Patented July 20th, 1897". The cabinet shows good condition overall with some slight wear from its antique age and years of use but no obvious signs of damage are noted. The spool cabinet measures 19.75" high by 17 7/8" diameter.
