Original program for an event “Honoring Major Leroy Gordon Cooper, Mercury Astronaut, for his successful 22 orbit flight in Faith 7,” held in the Benjamin Franklin Room at the State Department on May 21, 1963, measures 10.25 x 8 unfolded, signed in ink and ballpoint by all seven original Mercury astronauts: “Alan B. Shepard, Jr.,” “Gordon Cooper,” “Wally Schirra,” “DK Slayton,” “Scott Carpenter,” “Gus Grissom,” and “John Glenn.” The program is also signed by aerospace pioneer Robert Gilruth, the first director of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center.” Attractively double-matted and framed with a group photo, plaque, and eight NASA and Mercury Program pins to an overall size of 19 x 31. In fine condition, with some faint staining. This special event was highlighted the presence of President John F. Kennedy, who delivered an inspirational speech aimed at the bravery of Cooper and his fellow astronauts, while again doubling down on his belief that man would walk on the moon by the end of the 1960s. Earlier that day at the White House, President Kennedy presented Major Cooper with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Distinguished Service Medal.
