Liberty Seated 1858 quarter obverse, with solder spots both sides; reverse is engraved: clasping hands; Merchants Union Express Co. and belt buckle. The Merchants Union Express Company was a U.S. express carrier formed in 1867 that aggressively competed with American Express through a price war and employee recruitment. This strategy led to a merger between the two companies in 1868 to form the American Merchants Union Express Company, which subsequently reverted to the name American Express Company in 1873 after a reorganization.
