Certificate number 4 for 20 shares issued to James H banker on July 11, 1871. Signed by James Fargo as president, secretary illegible, Alex Holland as treasurer, printed by JH Duvckinck of New York. Small hole cancels at signature. Extremely rare, possibly unique brown P type internal revenue stamp at center. Not listed in Castenholz. On the reverse it is endorsed by banker and meant to be transferred to William H Vanderbilt, son of Cornelius Vanderbilt, of major railroad fame. This is unique in the Prag collection and may in fact be a unique certificate. Extremely rare. JC Fargo was a president of the American Express Company for 30 years, and the brother of American Express Company and Wells Fargo co-founder, William Fargo. Continuing along the line of creating new companies to enlarge the presence of the new American Express Company, the Directors formed the Merchants Dispatch Company to operate along the New York and Erie Railroad, which put them in the “fast freight business.”
