<B>Mercer, PA</B></I> - $5 1875 Fr. 406a <B>The Farmers & Mechanics NB</B></I> Ch. # 2256<BR> This excessively rare Friedberg number was not discovered until the mid-1990's and appears to have been issued by this bank only. Although various theories have been advanced as to why this note exists, the only one to make sense is that the bank decided to change its plate layout in 1885 during the one month tenure of Bruce and Jordan, resulting in the engraving of a Series 1875 $5 plate bearing those signatures for this one institution alone. Whatever the reason, the new plate created a major signature rarity, with this <B>Fine</B></I> specimen the only example ever to have appeared at public sale. When last offered a dozen years ago, it was obtained by Tom for $3300. With no others having appeared during that interval, and with this number bearing the simple designation "Rare" in the Friedberg catalogue, expect a considerably higher realization this evening, likely in the range of...<BR><I>From The Thomas M.
