No. 210, issued to Charles Day in Mercer, PA in 1871. This certificate was signed by Union General Gilbert McKibbin as treasurer, then transferred to Union General George B. McClellan and is signed by him on the back. Also enclosed is a period engraving portraying him as a General. Douglas McDonald Collection. A West Point graduate, McClellan served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. He was also a railway executive who served as vice president of the Illinois Central Railroad and president of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Major General McClellan created the Army of the Potomac, which he meticulously trained and equipped. This earned him the love of his soldiers and the nickname "The Young Napoleon". However, his cautious approach to warfare and his strained relationship with President Lincoln ultimately led to his removal from command after the Battle of Antietam. McClellan ran for president in 1864 as a Democrat on a peace platform but lost to Lincoln, then served as the 24th governor of New Jersey from 1878 to 1881.
