Mendenhall, Jones and Gardner, Confederate issue .58 caliber rifle with brass mountings showing C.S. marking on the rear of lock and date of 1864. The bayonet lug has been ground off of the right side of the barrel and the rifle shows fixed rearsight with Confederate arsenal cast brass mounts and the center portion of the lock is stamped M. J. & G. over capital N.C. There is a groove behind the breech in the tang and the tang shape is very irregular. The stock shows some minorreplacements of wood and minor restoration. The metal surfaces show light to heavy scattered erosion and pinprick pitting with the heaviest pitting occurring on the lock and firing areas from a great deal of battle action. The front ofthe hammer has been chipped off from striking the nipple continuously. The bore is very well worn with only faint traces of very shallow rifling. There is some losses of wood in the ramrod channel and there is some shrinkage around the buttplate. This stock shows two small Enfield type brass escutcheons around the lock screws which is correct. Also spring mounted brass barrel bands. A very rare Confederate issue rifle that is considered Museum quality and almost never seen.
