Memphis, TN U.C.V. Reunion Souvenirs 1901 & 1909
Memphis, Tennessee U.C.V. Reunion Souvenirs 1901, 1909. The United Confederate Veterans was an organization founded in 1889 as an association for Confederate veterans of the Civil War. They gathered on a regular basis both nationally and regionally for reunions in various locations, often getting together with their Union counterparts, the G.A.R. The first item is an interesting celluloid "scroll" (2" x 2.75") with a red hanger ribbon at the top. The color image is of a Tennessee native, CSA General Nathan Bedford Forrest inside a laurel wreath above three different flying Confederate flags. The text states "U.C.V. 11th Reunion" at the top and "Memphis May, 1901" at the bottom. Forrest was a controversial figure- a brilliant cavalry tactician who got involved with the Ku Klux Klan after the war and was elected their first Grand Wizard in 1867. He was known though to be very generous to his former comrades who went to him for aid after the war. He is buried at Forrest Park in Memphis.

The second item is a souvenir medal from the 1909 UCV reunion held also in Memphis. A likeness of the beloved CSA General Robert E. Lee is centered in this star-shaped 2" medal hanging from a pin. Both items are in excellent condition.
