Early Victorian - Empire Transitional Melodian. Circa 1840 in figured rosewood having a flat top with a beaded edge; hinged to fold back, exposing original ebony and ivory keys above an inlaid rail, with a fold up pierced scrolled music stand above; a beaded skirt on four large octagonal tapering legs attached to an open fiddle-shaped frame. This handsome melodian was restored by Spruce Tree Music in Madison, WI @ 22 years ago and belonged to a family in IL. This was a family piece, lovingly cared for. The original tuning fork for the reeded part is still in the case that contains the working bellows. A wonderful organ-like sounding parlor piece of furniture that is in fine working condition. Appraised by an antique expert in Madison in 1997 for a replacement value of $2395.
