For your consideration is a pair of Vintage Meiji Period Satsuma Vases (2), circa 1868-1912, Gyokuzan gold mark. The Satsuma style originated from pottery made in Satsuma, (present day Kagoshima prefecture, Kyushu). Korean potters had established kilns there in the late 16th century, producing large, hard designs which were coated in a dark glaze. The first major presentation of Japanese arts and culture to the West was at Paris' Exposition Universelle in 1867, and Satsuma ware figured prominently among the items displayed. Against a cobalt blue background is a garden scene with male and female figures, each vase is a reverse of the other. Gold gilt highlighting the figures and floral designs. Remnants of original stamps affixed to both vases. Slight fading of gold gilt consistent with normal use and age. Each measures 3.5" diameter x 7.5"H, 2" diameter base, 1.5" mouth. Total weight 1lb, 8oz
