Featured in this lot are five original Native American photos set on a board. These photos were submitted to, "The Meier & Frank Store's First General Amateur Photo Contest" in 1911. No publisher mark is present. This board was entry number "884" and was in the "Portraits" class. It shows five photos of various Native American men, women and children posing for the photos. The top left photo shows a Native American man standing, looking directly at the viewer while he wears hide pants and shirt, moccasins and a large feather headdress. The top right photo shows a young Native American girl playing with a toy or making a small trinket. She is wearing her hair in a braid and smiles as she works. Below that photo, it shows a mother and daughter sitting near a teepee posing for the photo. They have their hair in braids and the mother appears to wearing a trade blanket and large beaded necklaces. The bottom left photo shows a Native American man and his son standing near a teepee, posing for the photo. They look directly at the viewer with stoic looks and adorned with beadwork and feathers. The man is wearing a beautiful bone hairpipe breastplate. The bottom right shows a similar image but features a man and woman, possibly husband and wife. They are standing near a teepee and are looking directly towards the viewer. The woman is wearing a large, beautiful concho belt and a hairpipe breastplate, while the man wears a hairpipe breastplate and feathers in his hair. Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west. The photos show good condition overall with slight wear present from their age and use over the years, but no signs of obvious damage is present. The photos measure from 2" L x 1 3/4" W to 4 15/16" L x 1 9/16" W. The board they are set on measures 12 1/4" L x 11" W.
