Antique Meerschaum Pipe in Leather Case from Germany. c 1860-1870. This pipe likely belonged to the Reick/Schnitzer Family of Comstock Fame, owners of the famous Virginia City, Nevada Brewery. The pipe features 3 horses and silver initials set into the stone. The case is lined with red satin on one side and cream velvet on the other and reads: Eduard Hofbrauer / Wien / V. Wienstr. 65. Pipe measures about 4 inches. Used but in very good condition. See photos.
Meerschaum is an off-white silicate similar to soapstone. The German name "meerschaum" means "foam of the sea." Like soapstone, meerschaum floats, and was found floating in the Black Sea, hence the name. Antique meerschaum pipes are highly collectible with most specimens dated after the mid-1800s when meerschaum replaced porcelain in German pipe making. At one point, the stone become so expensive that pipe makers salvaged pieces of meerschaum and glued them together to create pressed meerschaum. These collectible pipes hold value because of their durability, rarity, and age. Meerschaum pipes are light weight, heat resistant and of porous structure, which does not flavor the tobacco the way wood pipes do.
