<td width="100%">
A rare cranberry & Victorian Carpet Ball or Bowl as
they were known in Scotland. This one is an fine example of a
medium size carpet ball. Larger and smaller one cane also be
found. Originally part of a set of 12. Carpet Bowls was an
indoor game popular in Scotland and later England. Similar to
Bocci Ball. The goal was to get your balls closest to a smaller
plain "Jack" while knocking your oppenents' out of they way.
Half the balls had a striped or plaid pattern, the other half had
sported a design made with a sponge. The sponged balls are
more rare than the others. Sometimes you will find carpet balls
with two or even three colors in the striped design. Examples of
these are featured in the 4th photo showing a collection that is
comprised of three of the four sizes. Tiny ones can also be
found on occasion. This smallest size are thought to be
salesman samples as the large ones are very heavy to carry
around. After the 1920s, plastics and other more light weight
materials were invented so the stone ones were no longer
practical. They were back in vogue when Interior Designers
started to feature them in the 1980s so consequently
reproductions appeared. Look for the marks of character where
the ceramic glaze has been chipped and worn through use. If
they look too perfect - beware!
