Single piece construction, 9" tall and 10 3/4" long, this is a full coverage helmet shaped to simulate the feaures of a man wearing a helmet, showing a scale decorated skullcap pattern "helmet" section which reveals the ears, contoured brow, and flowing shoulder-length hair and beard. A ventilation slit runs up each side almost to the ears, and the eyeholes are positioned to be anatomically correct. The finish on the helmet was achieved by painting on a green and bronze patina. Consignor states that it is a possible replica Germanic bronze Parade Face helmet, produced in the style of the Roman "Hippika Gymnasia" (Cavalry Sports) helmets. The gymnasia, much like the later mideval jousts, served as wargames to keep the cavalry in fighting shape and public displays of personal skill, with full coverage helmets with detailed features worn both for protection and demonstration of class and rank.
