Medina, Jose Toribio & Paul Karon & Jorge Ortiz Murias (eds.). LAS MONEDAS OBSIDIONALES HISPANO-AMERICANAS. Derechos Reservados. 1991. 4to. 240 pages. Original pictorial card covers. New. half-tone text illustrations. Third edition reprint of the 1919 original. The obsidional, or siege coinage, as well as the provisional and necessity coins that were struck in Latin America are the scope of this book by the Chilean scholar, Jos Toribio Medina. The importance of this coinage in history is incomparible as many were used by the Spaniards and patriots during the wars for independence. The provisional coins are probably the most prominent pieces in the numismatic history of the Americas as they were used to pay soldiers and government employees and stabilize the economies of each revolutionary society. The book presents historical information of each provisional mint and the mints are presented in alphabetical order. There is auction records for coins associated with each mint as well as an obverse and reverse photo for the examples. Very little information from subsequent studies has surpassed the historical contribution from this book and therefore is an important reference for the collector of Latin American revolutionary coinage. Lot weight: 2 lbs 2oz. Subject(s): Coinage - Latin America.
