Medieval Manuscript Leaf on Uterine Vellum, two pages, 5” x 7.75”, n.p., circa 14th century. Penned in Latin, this page is from an early monk's “Girdle Bible.” Uterine vellum, the finest of parchments, was made from the skins of either unborn or stillborn animals. Its smooth surface was suitable for the finest calligraphy as is evidenced here. Tiny uniform print covers both sides of the sheet with a mechanical precision that would seem beyond the abilities of a mere mortal. Accented with spots of blue and red. Two pinholes, else excellent condition. With 1953 catalog clip listing the item. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
