Imperial Cholas, base gold ½ Kahavanu attributed to Virarajendra Chola (1062-1070 AD), unpublished in major sources and unique so far, 2.37g. Obv: Dynastic emblem of the Cholas, strung bow, tiger seated, pair of fish, lamp-stands, Chhatra and flywhisks (Chauris), with Nagari legend Sri Vira Ra / jendra in two lines below. Rev: Garuda seated frontal and cross legged, holding two lotuses in hands, on a lotus-like seat, flanked by two royal sceptres and an umbrella with a fish and Sankha shell above.

Very fine, Exceedingly rare.

No coins of Virarajendra Chola have yet come to light. Virarajendra, the third son of Rajendra Chola, had a short but eventful reign. Under his command, the Chola armies marched against the Chalukya king Someshwara of Kalyana, sacking the provinces of Gangawadi and Rattawadi en route. He also led campaigns to Sri Lanka, Kerala and faraway Malay peninsula. This coin is significant also because of the reverse depiction, which in all probability is that of a Garuda. If so, it is highly unusual because Virarajendra is sometimes identified as a persecutor of Vaishnavism.
