Early medieval North Maharashtra - alloyed copper coin of 'Vishnukundin' fabric, attributed to Harishchandra dynasty of Nasik-Khandesh area, king Bhogashakti (c.700-720 AD), unpublished in any sources, highly unusual and rare type, 1.78g. Obv: Roaring lion in 'Vishnukundin' type, facing right. Rev: Elephant facing right; Brahmi legend Shri Bhoga above.

Extremely fine, Extremely rare.

Bhogashakti is known from two sets of copperplate grants found in the village on Anjaneri, near Trimbakeshwar. Both are now in the collection of the IIRNS, Nasik. It is evident from the inscriptions that the family name of Bhogashakti was 'Harishchandra' and his alias was 'Prithivichandra'. No coins of this dynasty were known and the find of this coins takes our understanding of the numismatic landscape of medieval Maharashtra a step further.
