Medical Faculty of 1846. Superb, massiv
Medical Faculty of 1846. Superb, massive oversize mezzotint depicting "Medical Faculty of the University of New York, and the Founders of the Medical Department." New York, "Published by Samuel S. and William Wood, 261 Pearl St.," 1846. Lithographed by G. & W. Endicott, 59 Beekman St. 24 x 28. In center, view of the ornate building. Surrounded by seven oval portraits, each 51/4 x 6, showing Drs. Valentine Mott ("Prof. of Operative Surgery, with Surgical and Pathological Anatomy"), Theodore Frelinghuysen (Chancellor), Granville Sharp Pattison ("Prof. of General, Descriptive, and Surgical Anatomy"), Martyn Paine ("Prof. of the Institutes of Medicine and of Materia Medica"), John William Draper ("Prof. of Chemistry"), Cunning S. Bedford ("Prof. of Obstetrics and the Diseases of Women and Children"), and John Revere ("Prof. of the Theory and Practice of Medicine"). Some wrinkles at top, incidental soiling and foxing, but bright, very good, and strikingly decorative and attractive. A dramatic depiction of medical education in its infancy, almost certainly printed in highly limited numbers, for display within the school. Rare.
