General Service Medal 1918-62. Indian forces were deployed in action in all most all the frontiers of the
British Empire. The medal presented here is for action in Iraq in the period 1919-20, soon after the end of
the Great War (also called the First World War). While the armistice was signed signaling the end of the War
in November 1918, minor actions continued well after the war had ended in Europe. The obverse carried
the effigy of George V, the reverse carries the image of Britannia, as a winged goddess of Victory placing a
wreath on the symbols of the Air Force (wings) and the Army (sword). The clasp carries the word ‘Iraq’. On
the edge is imprinted the name of the recipient: 358 Sepoy Pandu Nigudse 2-116 Mahrattas
What is significant about this medal, is that on the end of the Great War, several soldiers were demobilized
and the regiments of the army were reorganized in 1922. At this time 116 Mahrattas was disbanded, and
the soldiers then serving in this regiment were merged into others. Makes this a rare regiment. Silver.
