India General Service Medal 1895. While the major wars of the early and mid.-eighteenth century- such as
the Afghan War, Crimean War, and the Indian Mutiny were commemorated by the issue of medals, the
number of smaller campaigns waged all around the frontiers of the Empire became too many, and the
issue of a distinctive medal for each became impractical. This gave birth to the idea of a General Service
Medal, meant to be decorated by a clasp bearing the specific area of action. Campaigns conducted within
the Indian Empire were designated as India General Service (IGS) Medal. By this device, medals of the
same design could be awarded for different campaigns. The medal presented here is the second IGS
Medal introduced for the period 1895-1902. In this new design, the obverse carries the late Victorian effigy
of the reigning monarch with her titles. The reverse the standard of the British Empire held aloft by a British
and an Indian soldier, each carrying his respective weapon. The action commemorated here was on the
Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (see clasp). The name of the awardee as on the edge. It reads: 3534 Sepoy
Lachman Singh 21st Pjb Infy. The last abbreviation stands for Punjab Infantry. Silver.
