Medals: The First Medal with the Name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
1782 "Frisia Recognizes American Independence," (Dutch) Medal, struck in Silver, Choice Proof. Betts 602, 44 mm, 499.8 grains. By B.C.V. Calker. This was the first medallic appearance, albeit Dutch, of the name "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." The obverse shows a Frisian warrior clasping hands with an Indian princess holding a shield. Rejected at right is a figure of Britannia, a leopard, and a viper in the grass. The reverse has a multiline inscription of the Leeuwarden Society for Freedom and Glory. This medal commemorates the recognition of American Independence by the Dutch state of Friesland. A most historic, scarce, Revolutionary War Period medal.
