Medals: Silver Loss of The Somers Lifesaving Medal
c. 1851, "Loss of the Somers" Naval medal in Silver, Choice Uncirculated. Julian NA-24, 56 mm. The lovely example offered here has a few scattered tiny nicks in the fields and some very faint cabinet friction well hidden beneath an even layer of original blue and steel-gray toning. One medal was struck in gold and only 100 were struck in silver. On December 10th, 1846, the American ship "Somers" sank off the coast of Vera Cruz during the Mexican War. This medal was presented to those who participated in the lifesaving efforts. The obverse features an image of the "Somers" sinking; the reverse has lifeboats heading toward the sinking ship. As a silver issue, this is of the highest rarity and it is eagerly sought-after by collectors of the original presentation pieces.
