1866 Captains Creighton, Low and Stouffer Lifesaving Medal in Bronze, Gem Mint State. Julian LS-11, struck at the United States Mint. Huge, 80 mm diameter. Deep olive and gold, with lustrous surfaces. Gold versions of this medal were issued originally to the three Captains named thereon "For their gallantry in rescuing the passengers from the wreck of the steamer SAN FRANCISCO, January, 1853." Bronze specimens of this medal were first offered to collectors in 1875, but only 30 examples were struck. Designed by Anthony Pacquet, a name familiar to numismatists for his work on the reverse of Double Eagles in 1861. We are thrilled to present this magnificent specimen, the first we've ever handled.
