1896 Bryan Money "Dollar" in Silver, About Uncirculated. 52 mm. The wording on one side of this large, uniface piece states: "A GOVERNMENT DOLLAR CONTAINS / 412 1/2 GRAINS / COIN SILVER 900/1000 FINE / THIS PIECE CONTAINS / 823 GRAINS COIN SILVER / IN VALUE THE EQUIVALENT OF / ONE GOLD DOLLAR / SEPT 16TH 1896. / GORHAM MFG CO., SILVERSMITHS. The other side is blank. The purpose of these pieces was to illustrate graphically how the relationship of the prices of gold and silver had changed over time. In short, the owners of Silver Dollars were receiving less intrinsic bullion than they had enjoyed previously. William Jennings Bryan failed in his several attempts to become President, but his legacy is long remembered in his famous "Cross of Gold" speech and these intriguing "Dollars."
