An officially named posthumous split brooch sterling silver Navy Purple Heart awarded to Eugene A. Richie S1C USNR for his service on the USS Birmingham (CL-62), together with the recipient's Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and a silver religious medallion. Eugene Richie was among the men killed in action on 10/24/1944 after USS Birmingham came to the aid of USS Princeton which had been hit during the preliminaries to the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Accompanying the medal group is an original book entitled The Saga of the USS Birmigham: a Compilation of Her Officers & Men that describes the ship's wartime engagements and includes a complete crew list and their awards. There is a full account of the operations alongside USS Princeton, together with many photographs. Among the crew list Eugene Richie is listed as having received a posthumous Purple Heart during the "Leyte Operation, 24 October, 1944." Mr. Richie is also listed on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila's American Cemetery and his record can be located at the American Battle Monuments Commission web site. Both Purple Heart and book are in excellent condition.
