Medal USA NAMED CIVIL WAR POW GROUP GETTYSBURG ANDERSONVILLE
This group was awarded to Henry I. Frederick who served in the 43rd New York Infantry during the Civil War. It includes his 1893 Gettysburg Veteran Medal given during the dedication of the NY State monument at Gettysburg, a 1913 New York 50th Anniversary of Gettysburg Veteran Badge, and a large and properly named Andersonville Prison Survivor medal awarded in 1914 to the NY veterans who had been imprisoned there and were still alive at the dedication of the NY State monument at the site. Also present is a daguerreotype of a Civil War soldier that accompanied the group, almost certainly the recipient. Extensive research accompanies the group and documents the unit's engagement at the Battle of Gettysburg and subsequently at the Battle of the Wilderness where Frederick was among 78 men who became POWs. Included are copies of the recipient's service papers and a 1916 book entitled Dedication of the Monument Erected by the State of New York at Andersonville, Georgia 1914. This scarce book discusses the history of the monument and the ceremony where the medals were awarded – Mr. Frederick is listed on p. 140 as being among those present. The Andersonville Survivor medal is extremely rare, especially named, as records indicate that only 150 recipients were still able to come and attend the ceremony in 1914. Generally excellent condition, minor oxidation spots on the Andersonville Survivor medal.
