Grand Cross, 1st model (1881), for civil; sash badge, silver gilt, hallmarked "ARG", maker`s mark "JRF", both sides red enamelled, very fine quality with original complete sash; breast star, silver enamelled, maker`s mark "Josef Resch Fils - Bucarest", medium size pin on back, hallmarked "ARG", in original issue case by Joseph Resch Fils with the cipher of Carol I. Beautiful set in very fine quality. The order was instituted on March 14th, 1881, the day Romania was proclamed a Kingdom. This date and the legend "Prin noi insine" are the subject of the obverse medallion ring. In the medallion centre is the model of the Crown of Romania, specially designed and made (using iron from Turkish guns captured in the War of 1877) for the coronation of Prince Carol of Hohenzollern as King Carol I of Romania. The reverse medallion has in the centre the most important historical date of the new Kingdom, "10 Maiu" and in the ring the significant years: - May 10th, 1866, the entry of Prince Carol in Bucarest and his investiture as Prince; - May 10th, 1877, Independence Day; - May 10th, 1881, the Coronation of Prince Carol as King.
