Means, Philip Ainsworth. THE SPANISH MAIN - FOCUS OF ENVY 1492-1700. Charles Scribner's Sons. 1935. 8vo, 278 pages; Hardcover w/ DJ; Here we see the Spaniard exploring, exploiting and gradually settling the shores of the Caribbean. We see an Englishman attempting to reach the Incas from the southeast-at practically the same time that Pizarro was making his approach from the north. We see Hawkins, Drake and others-English, French and Dutch -raiding the Spanish settlements, attacking the treasure-fleets, and later making settlements of their own. We see Ralegh seeking El Dorado; Morgan looting Panama; and the Scots trying to settle at Darien. All in all, it is a tale more glamorous than fiction in that it is sound history based on original sources and fascinatingly told by a recognized authority. Subject: History - Sunken Treasure
