1904-1906 - Over 200 letters between McCune, who resided in Pittsburgh, Pa. and several different people in the west. He wrote to mining engineers, Thomas Darby of Goldfield and Edwin Hawkins, of Denver, discussing mining different mining ventures. McCune eventually hired a manager, Larry King, to look over, buy, sell or work mining properties in the west. Most of the exchanges are between King and McCune. King looks at property in Olinghouse, which will add another layer to the known history of the place. He was very enthusiastic about Olinghouse and bought up shares of several different mining companies for McCune. There are many letters about Goldfield and the difficulty in getting land patents there. McCune was sued over property infringements there. Also the letters reveal information about mining unions and mining in California in Pacific [House] and in Placerville. More importantly, the letters speak of how easy it was to take advantage of absentee owners with hopes of making it rich in mining ventures. McCune was from a wealthy Pennsylvania banking family and wanted to make more money in mining. His ventures did not work out that way. The letters show how King took McCune for $12,000.00 in one year`s time while bolding pressing for more things in the way of purchasing an automobile and home for King. McCune drew the line there. All very respectably done. A great read! Most of the letters here are hand written but easy to read and full of details about mining. The letters are in good shape. -52214
