Spine slightly darkened, spine ends frayed but lettering bright, and boards generally clean & bright. Minor, scattered foxing internally - a very good copy. (2)

Rosove 221.A1; Arctic Bibl. 10582; Spence 747. McCormick served with James Clark Ross on his famous Antarctic expedition in 1839-43, and this is the only first-hand narrative of that expedition other than Ross' own. He had earlier been with Parry's last expedition (to Spitsbergen) and later served with Belcher's Franklin search expedition in 1852-54. A very important account for both ends of the earth - and a book now of great scarcity. In an 1889 letter (just the year before his death) to T. B. Collinson, brother of Richard Collinson, McCormick indicates the book was brought out ".... at my very own risk and expense .... (in an) edition of 750 copies having nearly half of the number of copies still remaining on my hands and much as it is to be regretted, works on Polar Discovery meet with little or no response from the public in the present age." It seems reasonable to suppose many of those may have ben lost or disposed after McCormick died. No wonder the book is so very scarce today! See colour illustration.
