"Bucking Snow on McCloud R.R.R-" printed on bottom left of photograph and "Eastman lab, McCloud," listed as photographer at bottom right of cardstock. 4) A view of the town covered in snow with "McCloud in winter" printed at lower left of photo. High contrast with sharp focus. Several small scratches and one 5 1/2" thin blemish line runs near the top right of the image. No photographer listed, but likely an Eastman photograph based on age, location, and style of work. All photographs are approximately 9 1/2 x 7 1/2", mounted on an 11 3/4 x 9 1/2" original black cardstock base. The photographer listed on 3 of the works, J. H. Eastman, was born in 1880 in White Cloud, Michigan. After moving with his family to northern California in 1886, he started his photographic career in Sisson (later named Mount Shasta). He became a partner in the Shasta View Company in 1907, but lost his entire stock of plates and cards in a 1912 fire (Ref: oac.cdlib.org). The lumber company town of McCloud was supported by the McCloud River Lumber Company, also called Mother McCloud. A.F. Friday George built the first mill located in what is now McCloud in 1892, but it failed because of the difficulty of hauling the lumber over the hill by oxen. The town of McCloud was established in 1897 by George W. Scott and William VanArsdale, founders of the McCloud River Railroad Company. The railroad made it feasible to transport the lumber to more populated areas. They also purchased many small failed mills, including the old Friday George mill, naming it the McCloud River Lumber Company (Ref: mccloudchamber.com/history).
