This is an 1859 McClellan Military saddle, named for George McClellan. Prior to the Civil War McClellan was part of a commission studying European military tactics, weapons, and logistics. When he came back, he developed a saddle based on a Hungarian model. The simple open-tree design proved serviceable and cost-effective, and in 1859 it was adopted by the War Department. By the end of the Civil War, nearly half a million were produced. It remained standard issue in various models for the remaining history of the U.S. Cavalry, which was dismounted in WWII (1940's). They were used by the mounted cavalry in the Indian Wars, Spanish War, Civil War, WWI, & WWII. It's still used today by ceremonial mounted units in the US Army. This saddle features a leather covered open tree with a brass rigging ring to the front right of the cantle. Front brass plate reads "11 INCH SEAT". The saddle measures 19.5" L x 14" W; it is in good condition for its age.
